He signed for short extension.

He signed for $12.5 million, which is a little bit of a surprise, but this is no doubt

a message directed at the Edmonton Oilers.

Yeah, we'll start with that and then we'll get to the actual contract itself, because

yeah, I mean, right, McDavid said, right, this is very much like, you know, he believes,

believes in where they're going, but again, like he wants to win, right?

And he made it very clear that the most important thing to him right now is trying to win
spk_0
with his contract.

And you know, especially with a lot of the pieces they have, he also signed
spk_0
for Resign Jake Walman today, two seven by seven extension.

Good for.

Could you imagine a team just like trading Jake Walman and also attach it a second round
spk_0
pick two just to get rid of Jake Walman's contract?
spk_0
I could not imagine a team doing that, but and then said to flipping Jake Walman for first
spk_0
round pick, I could you imagine doing that crazy, crazy work, but counter McDavid though,
spk_0
like as you said, there is a two year time limit, right?

Like of what's going to happen, I guess three years because this year plus two years.

So three years for for McDavid to go like put on a, you know, for McDavid to be with Edmonton.

And for Edmonton to continue to build around this team, right?

They resigned.

They're very active in the office and trying to get new pieces in here, but I still think it
spk_0
just comes down to the golden as what's always built the oils, right? It's the gold tending and who
spk_0
can you solve your gold tending issues at any point?

And I think that's going to be the big question for them.

I popped in to look at the Edmonton Oilers cap situation for this year.
spk_0
This is not a joke. The Edmonton Oilers have $834 in calf space.

Oh no. Oh no.

You obviously have their literally that I have three job workers like this.

But this like, you know, we've seen this the last couple of years is that
spk_0
economic David and Lee and dry side as long as they stay healthy.
spk_0
They've been able to take this Edmonton team to the Stanley Cup final.
spk_0
When you run into a more full roster, that's when the problems arise.

And so you've obviously got great players on this roster, Ryan Nugin Hopkins,
spk_0
Zach Hyman signed both two very, very team friendly deals.
spk_0
But some of the other pieces on the roster, you know, are fair to question, I think.
spk_0
Like, remember how we all reacted to the Trent Frederick extension that just seems completely
spk_0
unnecessary? Those are the kinds of things that a GM will look back on after they have been removed
spk_0
from their current position and say, boy, I wish I had that one back.
spk_0
And like, those are the parts of the roster.
spk_0
Those are the dollars that you have to really maximize.
spk_0
Yeah. Yeah.

It's like you're paying almost $4 million for Trent Frederick, who's, you know,
spk_0
a cromulent fourth line center.
spk_0
You know, the Darnell Nurse Contracts, which still has 10,000 years left on it with no move
spk_0
classes until at least 28, 28 season.

You've resigned M Bouchard to, you know, four years at 10 and a half million.
spk_0
Like, I think that contract will age perfectly fine for them, but yeah,
spk_0
it's just, it's, and that's where good teams are good is around the edges, right?

Because all great teams, they have great players, right?
spk_0
Like, I mean, you look at Colorado.
spk_0
You know, you have Native McKinney, you know,
spk_0
Kale McCarr, you have like a bunch of great players, but they're so good is because
spk_0
they're able to get all these other guys who are kind of pushed down,
spk_0
but like at least pay wise, but able to, to provide, look at the Panthers, right?

Having Brad Martia and on your third line last year, like is a luxury because of,
spk_0
you know, the maneuvering that they did and the way that they were able to kind of
spk_0
manipulate their cap with the taxes, et cetera, et cetera.

But it's when you spend $4 million on Trent Frederick,
spk_0
when you can get the same type of production for, you know, vet, nimp right there.
spk_0
And then you use that $3 million somewhere else to get more scoring to get like, type, yeah.

So I don't know, but it's still, I think it just comes out of the gold tending.

If they can somehow upgrade the gold tending here, like that's going to be the big thing.

So I know we're a long time away, but do you think McDavid signs another contract with the

Oilers or just he become the biggest free agent NHL history?

He becomes the biggest and most sought after free agent in history.

You're going to see Brian's a sharks entry in their cup

attention with a bajillion dollars of cash.

It's going to be we're seeing McDavid play 2C behind celebrity, but I think it's something we

can all get used to.

The eye is going to be jarring to see him and Austin Matthews wearing the same jersey as

Conor Bredard in Chicago. I hate that. I know. I vomited. I said that on,

I said that on yesterday's episode of Lockdown Wild and I vomited in my mouth.

But no, he's going to be the most sought after free agent, arguably in the history of the sport.

And you think about the, you think about the teams that will line up for his services and
spk_0
will be willing to pay him 20 plus. But this is, this is why we are at this point as far as

McDavid and the Oilers go. You win one of those cups and you're not having this conversation.

But we have seen this Oilers team bat on the pieces being good enough to get it done.

We just need a little better performance here. We just need a little better performance here.

And they've run into the same Florida Panthers team in the last two years with a different
spk_0
look each time. And that Florida Panthers team has been able to take them to the cleaners.

I know they, I know they had the lead in the first meeting and ended up losing that series in seven.

But a lot of those games, Florida just took them, took them to the cleaners.

Yeah. Yeah. And again, like where did this roster get better this off season?

It's, you know, like I know they're trying to reload here. And like that's a problem right when

you're always in this cup contention window. Like at some point you start to just run out of
spk_0
things to trade and assets and you have to kind of take a reset and
spk_0
or make some hard decisions here. And you wonder if maybe they do try to move off a big time contract.

I'm looking at you, Darn Elners, with a full no move clause. But you wonder if they try to
spk_0
do something like that to try to move off a contract like that to give themselves some space
spk_0
and some flexibility to try to do fine other ways to build around the fringe and work around the
spk_0
fringe. So yeah, it's going to be it's fat like one of the biggest stories in the NHL is now
spk_0
this three year window that the oilers have. But it may even be shorter because if you get to a
spk_0
point where you realize, Dave is not going to resign. Your job as a GM is to trade him as soon
spk_0
as you can to cash in to make sure that you get something or else he doesn't just walk away
spk_0
complete like you don't walk away empty handed. So. And here's here's the spin off to that.

Let's say you get to the point where McDavid is like I've enjoyed my time here but it's time to

get some time for greener pastures. Quote. What does Leon Drysight all do? Oh, I think it McDavid leaves.

Part of me is like if McDavid leads you just burn it down because like I even at that point,

like drysightle will be in his you know early 30s like Zach Hyman is going to be in his mid 30s.

Ryan New job is going to mean is mid 30. Like at that point, I think you just start

to scratch. Like it's you you trade both those guys as hard as it is. You get back the war chest of

pieces to restart your next core right there. So yeah, that's I think that's what you do. But it's

easier said than done. So. Well, it whoever makes that call will not be the current GM of the

Edmonton Brothers I can about promise you that. And not an enviable spot to be whoever would have

to do that. So we're just not going to tear down the easiest part. It's the yes. We're just we're

just not going to entertain that as a possibility. Well, we are going to entertain is every fight in

the history of the NHL that happens in the final preseason game of the season between the Tampa Bay

Lightning and the Florida Panthers. Whole boy did we have a bunch of power plays 25 combined

between the two teams and some discipline. But also just a lot of fighting. We'll recap the the

melee in my oh man that could have worked so good. But it's not going to work this time.

FL same same initials. The fight in Florida there were a combined 25 power plays in this game

between these two teams because evidently there's a little bit of bad blood between the two.

I'm shocked. 182 penalty minutes for Tampa Bay 140 penalty minutes for Florida.

Who would have thought that the lightning and panthers didn't like each other. I guess we found

out. I guess we found out for the first time that they have a little bit of bad blood down there

in the state of Florida. I don't know my favorite part about this. Actually my favorite part is
spk_0
always the bench shot at the end when there's like three dudes sitting on the bench and it looks
spk_0
like a beer league game like 10 11 o'clock at night and they could barely scrape together a roster.

Definitely like that but I think actually though is the like coming out of it right and like
spk_0
you knew of course especially after what happened the previous game when there was a bajillion penalties
spk_0
and you know player Tampa Tampa player got hurt and they felt like Florida of course was doing Florida

things as Florida does because that's what Florida does. They're a very bully type team.

Then this happened right with all this and then we get of course we get the suspensions today.

I don't like Scott Saber got suspended. There's a couple suspensions from
spk_0
most of us suspended two games. Scott Saber got suspended two games. There was a bunch of
spk_0
Tampa fines including the organization which got fined $100,000. John Cooper got fined $25,000.

Conclaves got fined three grand. Schmidt got fined two grand and then all the panthers
spk_0
Greer gets fined to the maximum allowable by the CVA.
spk_0
Like absolute gong show of performance like I was keeping an eye on it over the weekend as
spk_0
this thing was just coming up on my Twitter feed and just an absolute gong show of performance.

Like as funny as it is we also like we can't have this right like the NHL needs to step in and
spk_0
be like you guys can't do this to each other anymore as much as you guys don't like you have to
spk_0
separate the the simple right of being like you go to your room you go to your room you're not
spk_0
allowed to talk to each other right now go cool off next year you can't schedule preseason games
spk_0
with each other like we can't have this right no this is where a functioning
spk_0
department of player safety would absolutely like bottle this up yeah and if there was an escalation
spk_0
between these two teams who play on November 15th for the first time this season if there was
spk_0
an escalation you just start slapping people with five game suspensions and you say we can't do
spk_0
this like you have to you know I've I've said it a lot on the show JD especially with you yeah if
spk_0
department of player safety is going to be taken seriously you have to start setting an example of
spk_0
people and so you just have to anybody that is involved in any sort of fighting in that that first
spk_0
match up between these two teams you slap him with a five game suspension because it's that's
spk_0
the only way that players are going to get in their heads like okay we can't do this um
spk_0
but they're not going to like I loved in the the wrap up that ESPN had that uh
spk_0
subween was he's going to forfeit $16,145.84 roughly $850 for every second that he played
spk_0
in Saturday's game that was got separate now that for friend of the of locked out sharks got
spk_0
separate excellent now that for the layperson the the normal everyday commoner $850 a second is
spk_0
frightening yes but for an NHL player it's not as bad now they don't even know if he's going to serve
spk_0
the suspension that he received because he was sent down to see it's gonna be the a child that doesn't
spk_0
but I loved this I loved this nugget from Saturday's game yeah there were so many penalties called

that the on ice crew evidently lost track of who had been kicked out Florida's Niko Mikola was
spk_0
credited with an assist midway through the third period on a goal by Jasper Boquist that was
spk_0
disallowed about 15 minutes later because Mikola was unaware that he had been ejected earlier in
spk_0
the period and therefore ineligible to be playing amazing like who how how does this happen how do
spk_0
we get to this point I part of me hope to like wait back and like swap jerseys and like put a fake
spk_0
mustache on the body valentine and just came back onto the bench with the fake mustache yes one thousand
spk_0
percent yeah absolute ridiculous like and that's like that's a good thing about preseason now like

one of the good things about preseason being shorty now because like you see this with all these

you know teams work especially you team like row teams like they tend to ice more AHL type of teams

and you have young players you have kind of like your AHL you know grinders who are trying to make

a name for themselves and they're trying to make that big hit kind of impress somebody type of thing

and you that's where you kind of get this like just you know and like it doesn't happen all the time

but like it definitely happens and then you put in the bad blood between these two franchises here

so yeah like it's a good thing the preseason's getting getting cutch it's way too long right now

like these guys are too good like it's just a waste of everybody's time at this point like you
spk_0
know yes it's sex for some of these rookies and stuff that we're going to talk about here but like
spk_0
for the most part it's it's too long and it's good we're cut missing now yeah and it's you know
spk_0
this is coming off of the previous game that these two teams played and there were 49 penalties in
spk_0
that game and just 186 penalty minutes because here's the other part of it too if you do if you go
spk_0
the suspension route the the team cannot fill that roster spot so if you do that to Tampa Bay and
spk_0
you say you had four guys that were suspended for five games they're down four and you say well
spk_0
that's not fair it's like well you should have thought about that before you turn it into fight club
spk_0
yes i do think they're there needs to be a little bit more balanced to like the panthers can't get
spk_0
away with just like a two grand fine to one player yeah i'm surprised it was it's like
spk_0
making example out of everybody but again as you said that would require a functioning
spk_0
department of players at yeah you just you just make an example out of everybody you hand out

suspensions like you're handing out lottery tickets you just say you get one you get one you get one

you bumped into an official trying to get into the fight you get one too and you're gonna have

some players that are like there's no way i deserved the five game suspension but then you
spk_0
respond by saying you were part of it you get the same as everybody else yep but we don't have to
spk_0
worry about that because that's never gonna happen

JD the rookies the rookies are on the way for many teams throughout the NHL and so let's

let's celebrate some of those rookies and let's take a look at some of the names that could have
spk_0
big impacts this season. Yeah so you know there's a for the 2025 draft which was kind of considered
spk_0
to be like a down year several players from this draft class cracked the opening night roster but like
spk_0
notable guys who are gonna you know gonna be making a potential impact this year.
spk_0
Rebecca Seneca who was the third overall pick last year by the Anaheim Ducks. Alex Sandin
spk_0
Pelica from Detroit from a couple years ago Matthew Savoy from Edmonton. Zibulium Daniel Yura
spk_0
from your wild Brady Martin who was the fifth pick from this year. His draft Matthew Schaefer who
spk_0
was the first overall pick from this year's draft for the islanders Ben Kindle from the Pittsburgh
spk_0
Penguins who's in this year's draft as well. Michael Misa Sam Dickinson. Misa the second overall pick
spk_0
and then Dickinson was the 11th overall pick from last year both for the Saturday Sharks,
spk_0
the upgraded Coots for Vancouver who was also in this year's draft like. Doesn't mean all these
spk_0
guys are gonna stick right but it is an accomplishment for these guys especially these guys this 2025
spk_0
draft to get here and you know as a quick reminder most these guys will get what the nine game rule
spk_0
right and basically what happens is if you play you can play in the NHL on these on these contracts
spk_0
on your ELCs up to nine games after that ninth game once you play your tenth game your first
spk_0
your contract kicks it so what teams will do a lot is they'll play these kids for eight or nine
spk_0
games and then decide like if they feel like they're NHL ready they'll keep around if that they'll
spk_0
send them back to juniors or Sweden or wherever they're supposed to go you know like wherever they're
spk_0
coming from as that way they can finish out their year of development so again you know I don't
spk_0
know how many or all these guys are gonna stick like I have a good feeling on some of them like I
spk_0
think Michael Misa is gonna stick for the sharks I was really surprised to see Schaefer sticking around
spk_0
but especially after only playing 27 games last year so he's an interesting one if he sticks around
spk_0
you know I know your guys Zeeve I'd be interesting to see especially with how deep that wild
spk_0
defenses if he sticks around if he spends some time in the AHL but yeah it's it's like the NHL's
spk_0
in such good hands when you look at like the future players are gonna be starting to make an impact
spk_0
here right and there's there's a lot of exciting players here who are going to be future stars in
spk_0
the NHL it's it's fun to watch these kids kind of start this journey through here so with any of
spk_0
these guys kind of stick out to you that you're a little surprised by you're just excited to watch
spk_0
you you know wild or not wild players um I'm gonna do you one better yeah here are according to
spk_0
the Fandule the colder trophy odds for 20 to 100% debuts like debudov is the like yeah but he
spk_0
played on me that's why yeah he's that's why he's not included because he played last year like these
spk_0
are guys who are like making NHL debuts here yes Michael Misa is plus 1100 which is second best odds
spk_0
that's second I thought he was like fifth best okay okay it goes plus 180 for like you're basically
spk_0
you're basically giving Vegas money to bet on debudov at the point um Misa is part of a crowd that's
spk_0
at plus 1100 that is second Zeev Boyam is plus 2700 one that I really like yes per Valkstad is plus
spk_0
6500 hmm at least they're gonna play tough games I think well the wild have 15 back to backs so he's
spk_0
gonna play at least 15 games but yeah I think he'll get 20 25 but like you look at like Justin

Wolf last year putting the win it and he played 50 plus games right I went through because like with

Asgrove Asgrove is in this right and the the goalies how hard it is for goalies to win or even
spk_0
fine like the in the final like you have to drag your team to playoffs you have to start like 40 to 50

games type of and like and your numbers of course have to be good like it's so hard for goalies to be
spk_0
in the call to race because a lot of it depends on team success that's why like Asgrove I'm
spk_0
what's Asgrove's odds but because I'm sure they're a little bit better but like I don't like his
spk_0
odds because it just the sharks just aren't going to have the team success so because like he's also
spk_0
the same spot right I literally just sign my here's plus 2200 again it's just like you like Justin

Wolf right last year basically drug the the flames to you know just missing the playoffs yeah and yeah

like a lot of unfortunate with goalies like it's it's a tough ask for the color because that's

what they look to right is all how many games did you win and how how good was your team with you

so yeah I don't like goalie colder odds sorry buddy very rude I know I save you money to bet on the

Vikings don't talk to me about that just every just rip every bandaid off and just pour saltwater

directly onto the wound obviously I'll be watching the wild contingent of rookies but somebody in

the division you know a few of these players that I'm really I'm intrigued to see what Isaac Howard

does you know he was kind of a we don't have enough room at the in player for Tampa Bay and he knew
spk_0
that so he's like I don't want to play here so what does he do with his opportunity I mean I'm I
spk_0
just have always been kind of a Seattle like Seattle is kind of my second team so what what do what do

we get from Berkeley can you know what what do we get from him in his first real taste of the NHL
spk_0
does he even does he even play you know that'll be something that's intriguing as well a lot of
spk_0
these guys you're right on a lot of these guys are going to get just a little sample size to kind
spk_0
